French Plum Jams
You may know David Karp a.k.a. California’s beloved “Fruit Detective” known for his famous New York Times column about rare fruits and his brainy obsession with fruits from all over the world–well, he and Andy Mariani of Andy’s Orchards planted three acres of Reine Claude trees in 2006, now only one of maybe three orchards in the entirety of the US to produce Reine Claudes, whose seeds Andy returned home with from France, the homeland of these otherworldly-sweet, juicy and green plums known to win over hearts instantly upon first bite.
Mirabelles, like Reine Claudes, are green in color, but smaller, and oh-so-sweet–they melt in your mouth and are perfect for pies and also…jam! They harvest a few weeks later, from a much smaller orchard, as they’re even harder to grow than Reine Claudes–our yield this year was only 6 cases.
